To achieve expert results, please take the time to carefully read and understand the following directions before you begin your restoration project. If you have any remaining questions or concerns, please call us toll-free for technical assistance.

ALWAYS WORK IN A WELL-VENTILATED AREA. A NIOSH/MSHA APPROVED AIR SUPPLIED RESPIRATOR is recommended. ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTIVE GLOVES AND EYEWEAR.

SURFACE PREP:
FOR THE BEST END RESULTS, apply BlackTop to clean & dry surfaces that have been sealed with KBS RustSeal. If needed, use KBS AquaKlean to remove all surface contaminants. (Avoid solvent-based cleaners which leave invisible residues that can affect the adhesion of BlackTop.) To topcoat freshly painted RustSeal surfaces (less than 4 days old), apply BlackTop directly as no other prep is required. For all other applications, lightly sand with 320 grit paper then clean & dry surface. Apply a light coating of KBS Fusion by aerosol or brush. You are ready to topcoat once Fusion is dry.

BLACKTOP APPLICATION:
Do not shake can. Do not whip. Take the time to stir contents thoroughly making sure pigments are well-dispersed. Do not paint directly out of can. Dispense a working amount of BlackTop into a separate container (steel or glass is best) and seal can immediately. Unused paint should NEVER be put back into the can as it will shorten its shelf life and cause pressure build-up possibly popping the lid. Keep can groove free of paint by using a scoop or KBS paint spout. Use plastic wrap between the lid and the top of the can to stop metal to metal contact as BlackTop is extremely strong and tough and can permanently seal the lid. Store in cool dry place.

Ideal BlackTop application temps are 55-82°F (13-28°C). For best end results, use only in moderate to dry atmospheric conditions i.e. 70% humidity or lower. Apply BlackTop to prepared surfaces by brush or spray equipment. BlackTop is self-leveling and brush marks will flow out unless adverse environmental conditions such as elevated heat & humidity exist. Under these circumstances, BlackTop will cure too quickly leaving visible brush marks. To remedy, thin BlackTop about 5-10% to slow cure time & enhance its self-leveling properties. Use KBS #1 Thinner only. Apply one or two covering coats (2 mils or 30um thickness) for general automotive applications. For marine or industrial applications, apply a minimum of two covering coats. Recoating can be done once first or consecutive coat is dry-to-touch. For end best results, always apply coats consecutively within 24 hours of each coat curing. Average cure times are 2-4 hours depending on humidity levels. .

SPRAYING BLACKTOP:
Always use a NIOSH/MSHA approved air supplied respirator. Spray pressure of 35-45 psi (250-330kpa) for siphon/pot guns 25-35psi (170-250kpa) for gravity/top container guns. Thin 5-10% as required. Use only KBS #1 Thinner.

CLEAN UP:
KBS # 1 Thinner is ideal for immediate clean up including cleaning your spray gun. BlackTop must be cleaned up before it dries. It cannot be removed by any solvent once it is cured. Always wear protective gloves to avoid skin contact and temporary staining. If skin contact accidentally occurs, immediately remove with #1 Thinner or lacquer thinner followed by soap and water. If BlackTop should stain your skin, only the course of time will remove it.
